  1. Does everyone who wish to conduct activities for profit or gain need to register their business with the Registry of Companies and Businesses (RCB)?
    No. The RCB does not require registration for the following activities:
    • A person holding a hawker's license
    • A craftsman who conducts his work at home, does not display his products and has no employees
    • A taxi driver
    • A trishaw driver
    • A sampan man
    • A farmer, a fish pond kepp or a prawn pond keeper who does not have any employees, does not own the land and does not charge any entrance fee
    • A statutory authority
    • An institution, society or person named in the First Schedule, Income Tax Act
    • A registered society
    • A registered co-operative society
    • A registered mutual benefit organization
    • A professional who provides his professional services solely, such as a lawyer, doctor, accountant, architect and engineer
    • A foreign company, which is registered under the Companies Act, Cap 50 to carry on business in Singapore
    • A company which is registered under the Companies Act, Cap 50, and carries on business under its registered name. Back to top

  2. Am I eligible to register a business?
    The person who intends to register a business does not have to be a Singaporean nor does the company who intends to register a business be incorporated in Singapore. However, the manager of the business must be a Singaporean, Singapore Permanent Resident, Singapore Employment Pass Holder or Dependant's Pass Holder. Back to top

  3. What is a Trademark?
    A trademark is an intellectual property and according to the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, "a trademark is any visually perceptible sign capable of being represented graphically and which is capable of distinguishing goods or services dealt with or provided in the course of trade by a person from goods and services so dealt with or provided in the course of trade by any other person".   4. What constitutes a Trade Mark?
    A trade mark could be in the form of a letter, signature, brand, device, label, name, shape, color, word, numeral, heading, ticket or any combination of these. Back to top

  5. Do I have to have a trademark and register it?
    You do not have to have a trade mark. However, trademarks are useful in creating an image and in making your business distinct from others.

    The common law protects the infringement of trade marks. However, registering your trade mark would give you statutory monopoly over it and would avoid lengthy and costly litigation. It is not compulsory to register a trade mark in Singapore. Back to top

  6. If I register my trade mark in Singapore, am I protected from its infringement overseas?
    No, you are only protected in Singapore. Other countries have their own laws governing intellectual property. Back to top

  7. How do I register a trade mark?
    You may either apply directly to the registrar or authorize an agent to act on your behalf. An agent would be responsible with all the matters relating to the registration. A lawyer can be your agent. Back to top

  8. What is workmen's compensation?
    Workmen's compensation is money paid to employees when he or she is injured or dies as a result of an accident during the course of employment. Medical expenses, up to a certain amount can also be claimed under the Workmen's Compensation Act of Singapore. Back to top

  9. Can I claim workman's compensation?
    You can claim workmen's compensation if you:
    • Suffer personal injury in the course of employment
    • Are the dependant or one of the dependants of a deceased workman Back to top

  10. I am a casual worker can I claim for workmen's compensation?
    You cannot claim for compensation if you are a casual worker, domestic servant, police officer, outworker or if you are a member of your employer's family.

    People who can claim for workmen's compensation are employees or apprentices who perform manual work regardless of their income and those who perform non-manual work and earn $1,600 or less every month. Back to top

  11. What sort of injuries does workmen's compensation cover?
    Workmen's compensation is payable to the employee if the injury caused permanent or temporary incapacity or death. Incapacity includes incapacity caused by occupational diseases as listed in the Second Schedule of the Act. Back to top

  12. What do I do if I get injured at work or through work?
    You must first notify your employer or your immediate boss. You must take note of the date and the nature of the accident. Either you or your dependant should check with the Ministry of Manpower if your employer has lodged your case. And compensation claim must be made within a year of the accident or within a year of the workman's death. Back to top

  13. What do I do if my employee gets involved in an accident?
    As the employer, you have the obligation to oversee the welfare of your employees. You must ensure that the injured workman receives medical examination from an approved practitioner free of charge within five days of knowing about the accident.

    In addition, you must inform in writing the Ministry of Manpower and his or her insurers about the accident, within 10 days if the accident causes death, within 18 days if it causes incapacity in such a way that the workman is unfit to work for more than 14 days, or within 15 days if the workman is unfit to work for 14 days or less.

    The Commissioner of Manpower will then send you a set of medical forms that must be completed by the approved doctor in treating your employee. Back to top

  14. Who needs a Professional Visit Pass?
    A professional visit pass is required for people who wish to engage in short-term professional assignment in Singapore. For example, academics participating in workshops, journalist, missionaries, artistes, etc. Back to top

  15. How do I apply for a Professional Visit Pass?
    You must submit your application through a local sponsor or though the employer (if you are a performing artiste). Back to top

  16. What if the application is not approved?
    Your local sponsor or your employer can lodge an appeal in writing stating information that may be relevant and that would support your appeal. You may also wish to enclose supporting documents. Back to top

  17. How do I apply for Permanent Residence?
    An application for Permanent Residence is an application for an Entry Permit. You would need to complete an application form from the PR Services Center or download it form the Net and submit the completed form personally at the PR Services Center, SIR Building. Back to top

  18. Are there any documents required when I apply?
    Yes. Documentation would differ depending upon who is applying for the residency. Please check with the PR Services Center regarding the required documents. Back to top

  19. Who can apply for residency?
    The following are eligible to submit applications:
    • Spouse wife or unmarried children of a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident
    • Aged parents of a Singapore Citizen
    • Employment Pass Holders
    • Investors or entrepreneurs
    • Hong Kong residents who satisfy certain guidelines Back to top

  20. If I am a Singapore resident, do I still need an employment pass to work in Singapore?
    No, but you may need to apply for registration on any other conditions stipulated by the respective professional bodies. Back to top
