George Hwang’s practice focuses on Intellectual Property, Information Technology, Media and Entertainment Law with substantial emphasis on Corporate work. His adventurous and pioneering instincts has led him to take up the challenge of establishing an Intellectual property and Media Department in the heartlands. Fully aware of the concepts of perceived value and real value, and having worked all over the world, he decided that to offer real value. Savings in the trappings of a 30 storey sea view office can now be transferred to clients.
George’s first job is in Hong Kong, where he joined one of the city’s largest firms. He counts being a member of the defence team for the ex-colony’s richest tycoon as his first cases. He left practice to take up the challenge of being Warner Music Publishing (HK) Ltd’s general manager, becoming the first fully qualified lawyer in S.E. Asia to take such a plunge. During his time with the music industry, he was involved with at least 2 firsts in the legal arena. They are the Industry Agreements for Mechanical Rights and Ephemeral Rights.
Upon his return to Singapore, George was contracted by Ngee Ann Polytechnic to be its Media Law Consultant. He is the first lecturer for this course to its ‘Film, Video & Sound’ students.
The various positions he has held include General Counsel for media companies, dotcoms, and IT start-ups in their halcyon days. He then headed the Commercial and Corporate Department of a small local firm.
George is the first Singaporean to teach in the Bahamas with the University of West Indies. He was the only Singaporean there.
George Hwang is not new to being the only Singaporean in his working environment. He experienced it as a “stagiaire” at the European Commission and as a volunteer lecturer at the Varna University of Economics in Bulgaria.
George is on the list of neutrals, Arbitration Centre, World Intellectual Property Organisation and a member of International Media Lawyers Association’s first elected Steering Committee. He is an alumnus of the Salzburg Global Seminar. He has published many articles on Intellectual Property and Media Law in refereed law journals and is the first news Country Correspondent for “Entertainment Law Review”, for Singapore and Hong Kong. He is also one of Intellectual Property Office of Singapore’s SCOPE IP Consultants.
George speaks English, Chinese and French. |
